Think All Closets and Cabinets Are the Same? Think Again
When it comes to custom storage solutions, the quality of materials, systems, and the companies that build and install them can vary greatly. Below are six essential factors to consider carefully before selecting a provider — ensuring your choice aligns with your specific needs, expectations, and budget
1. The Board Material
What are your cabinets actually made of? Consider:
- Material type: Particleboard, MDF, plywood, solid wood, hollow-core panels, etc.
- Thickness: 1", ¾", ⅝", or ½".
- Top coat: Melamine, thermofoil, wood veneer, vinyl, decor paper, etc.
- Edge banding: What type is used — PVC, uPVC (virgin or recycled), or paper-based? How is it applied?
- Board quality: Includes properties like Modulus of Rupture (MOR), Modulus of Elasticity (MOE), Internal Bond (IB), screw-holding strength (face/edge), and formaldehyde emissions.

2. Hanging Rods & Flanges

4. Drawers - A Key Investment
Drawers are one of the most functional — and costly — components of any closet or cabinetry system. Just adding six drawers to a basic reach-in closet can nearly double its price. That’s why it’s important to understand what you’re paying for.
There are 26 factors that determine where a drawer falls on the scale from basic to high-end. Here are the 5 factors that make the biggest difference:
• Type and quality of the board used for sides, bottom, and
• 5-Piece vs. 6-Piece Construction – Do the drawer face and box come as one or are they built separately?
• Type of slide mechanisms and their position (bottom-mounted or top-mounted).
• Construction method — nails, dowels with glue, cams, screws.
• Whether the drawer has a floating bottom or fixed bottom with a perfect square build.
At ART of ORGANIZING, we use ¾" board for all drawer parts. Faces can be upgraded to almost any style and finish. We only build 6-piece drawers — never floating bottom — and offer three slide options:
• Roller slides.
• Full-extension telescopic ball-bearing slides.
• Premium soft-close telescopic slides.
